Pediatric Speech and Language Therapy (SLP) in Texas
There are many common disorders that may affect speech.
Developmental delays often impact the way a child learns and develops speech and language. Often times this results in a child not yet speaking or not speaking clearly to others. When a child is not able to speak clearly to others, this may be due to an articulation disorder.
Apraxia of speech is a motor speech disorder that makes it hard to speak. The messages from the brain do not get through correctly to tell the muscles how and when to move to make sounds. Children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech understand language and know what they want to say, but the brain is not able to tell the muscles of the mouth to move.
Hearing loss may also cause speech and language delays. Hearing screenings are a routine part of the initial speech-language evaluation. If there are concerns with your child’s hearing, your therapist will make a referral to an audiologist for formal hearing testing. If your child already has an identified hearing loss, your therapist will coordinate treatment plans with the audiologist and utilize our Deaf and Hard of Hearing mentors as needed to develop the most appropriate treatment plan.
Neuro-diverse populations, such as children with autism, may communicate in unique ways, in particular when it comes to social communication. We strive to support our therapists to stay up to date with current best practices in all areas, including when working with neuro-diverse populations.
